CIVIL LIBERTIES? This is going to be my first controversial subject I am going to talk about. I really do despise these civil liberty groups, as I find they do all the "do goody" stuff and end up making life a little less secure. They try and support the few at the risk of the many. "In what way" you might ask. Well here are a few arguments I have. - On the radio on Friday, I heard a report on the news that Police in Derbyshire were searching for 2 prisoners who had escaped from an open prison. They would not release pictures of the fugitives as it would breach THEIR (prisoners) civil liberties!!!!
WTF is all that about????????? What about us poor civilians who now know that there are 2 prisoners on the loose? Where is our civil liberties, our protection? - Whilst our Government have tried on numerous occasions to bring in tough anti-terrorism laws, civil liberty groups have successfully managed to get these laws watered-down.
Does this mean the protection of the masses has been compromised, just so we can allow a few immigrants/possible terrorists their civil liberties????? - The Government wants to introduce Identity Cards. I am fine with this, I have nothing to hide and it would not bother me if I had to show it to some inspector every day. And like the majority of the British public who have nothing to hide, we would feel a little more secure with these cards in use.
So why do civil liberty groups disagree with these ID cards? Maybe because all the people they are trying to protect are criminals, illegal immigrants and possible terrorists!!!!!!!!! The safety and security of Britain and it's people must be paramount, so surely the philosophy must be to sacrifice the few to save the masses, not the other way around!!!???!!! What is your point of view on this?? |

Although I am an American, I couldn't agree with you more! We too are facing the same BS in the United States. A repeated sex offender rapes a 7 year old child and then he is released into the community and everyone is told to get over it including the little boy. What happened to that child's civil liberties? We are facing the same border issues also. Maybe if enough people start making a noise, the innocents will prevail.

Oh please. I MISS your semi-smutty images... My point is that, things change, and if the rights of the individual are not protected, and the masses get to rule based on the vagaries of who's swayed their opinion lately, there's no telling who or what group may becoame the target as the world, (or whatever country in question) shifts to "The rights of the group superceded the rights of the individual."

It is unlikely they will round up people because of having half-smutty images on their blog, and even if they do, they wont want me as I do not do that anymore. Though it does make you think that there were an awful lot of visits to my blog, so therefore there must have been a lot of interest for it, even you paid a number of visits to it!!!!
As for the rest of your comments, I respect your position on civil rights, but i do believe the protection of the masses should supercede that of the individual when it comes to terrorist, murderers, rapist etc.
Maybe in your country the police carry guns as general issue, but here in Britain they do not, and firearms are only used in extreme instances, though that is not to say mistakes are not made, but they are few and far between.

Hmmm... So what if, in the name of protection of the public, at some time in the future, it's decided that anyone whoever showed semi-smutty pictures on their blogs needed to be rounded up? After all, it's those do-gooders who make sure that YOUR civil liberties are protected as well. Make sure you don't take the attitude that since YOUR ox isn't being gored right now, that it never will be. I can tell you of a case here in the states where they released pics (which they do all the time here) of some supposed criminals. Someone spotted one of the perps, called the cops, they went to arrest the person- who put up a fuss, claiming innocence - and was shot and killed. Later? Oops. Wrong guy. Wrong pics too. So sorry. Too bad. Tough cookies.
I understand your frustration, but... you might want to think it through. As soon as the protection of the masses supercedes the protection of the individual, societies inevitably turn vicious. The masses are, after all, made up of indiviuals, not the other way around.
